Father's Day is celebrated in the third Sunday of June. According to a Wikipedia page compiled at Tinkrbox, a video/website bookmarking site, it is a day which we honor fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of father in society. It complements Mother's Day and is a widely known celebration.
According to a website compiled at Tinkrbox, a lady named Ms Sonora Luise Smart Dodd from Washington started father's day. She was raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother passed away. She wanted her father to know how special he was to her. Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, she started a campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. This campaign was supported by The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association. As a result, the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. The idea gradually gained popularity across the country.
President Woodrow Wilson and President Calvin Coolidge soon approved this idea. After a protracted struggle of over four decades, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's day in 1966.
According to the same website, scholars believe that the origin of Father's Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon. A young boy called Elmesu allegedly carved a Father's Day message on a card made out of clay 4000 years ago. In his card, he wished his father good health and thanked him. There was no recorded history on what happened to Elmesu.
Several videos on father's day can be found at Tinkrbox. Enjoy them, fathers!
